The entire piece is crafted for the soprano, utilizing extended sounds by the mouth that contrast with conventional vocal timbres.
I aim to intersperse extended vocal timbres with the regular ones, which can indirectly highlight and amplify the conventional vocal timbres, making them more captivating.
It’s a dialogue between two individuals, where two different timbres represent two distinct characters. The extended timbre sounds more like a whisper, whereas the conventional timbre retains the original singing quality of vocal music.
The soprano must embody both roles, serving as both the narrative voice and the singing voice. In this process, the extended timbre tilts her more towards the narrator, while the conventional timbre transforms her into the singer.
In terms of timbral contrast, the extended timbre, somewhat dark and percussive, is augmented by corking sounds, inhaling and
exhaling noises, sounds of tongue obstruction, and a ticking sound. These extended sounds create a stark contrast with the melodic singing of the conventional timbre, further emphasizing the singing quality of the latter.
