The idea for “Dark Surge” originated from the metro bell sound that I hear every day. I became fascinated by its timbre and began to consider whether such a sound could be recreated through compositional means. During this exploration, I discovered that the stove holder of my Moka pot produces a remarkably resonant tone. I therefore began to treat it as a bell-like instrument and used it as a sonic reference in the piece.

At the same time, I was interested in how a seemingly simple sound might unfold into a richer and more complex sonic environment. By carefully listening to recordings of the metro bell and studio recordings of the stove holder, I began to notice details that are usually hidden beneath the surface of the sound. When the gain is increased and the sound is slowed down, subtle vibrations, resonances, and after-ringing become perceptible. The microphone captures these delicate sonic traces, revealing what feels like a microscopic world within the sound itself.

However, when the parameters return to their original state, these details disappear again. This contrast between what is audible on the surface and what lies beneath it became a central idea of the piece. I refer to these hidden sonic layers as the “under surface.” “Dark Surge” explores this process of revealing and concealing the inner textures of sound, translating an acoustic observation into instrumental expression.
